What's in our Parent Reading Guides?

Background Knowledge

The Parent Reading Guide will give you tips and ideas to help your child learn more about a certain topic relating to the book you have chosen. The more background knowledge your child can build, the easier it will be for him or her to understand what they hear and read!

Vocabulary

Did you know that your child’s vocabulary is one of the best detering factors in your child’s future reading ability?! It’s true - the more words they know directly impacts all of their other learning! The Parent Reading Guides will highlight specific words for you to point out to your child, and we also provide you with wording and kid-friendly explanations.

Language

Children can only understand what they read when they can understand what they hear. The Parent Reading Guides will include tips on how you can support your child’s oral language development in understanding and speaking with increasing sentence complexity.

Comprehension

There are so many things that our children have to pay attention to as we read other than just listening to the words we read! Sometimes the pictures or illustrations give us more details, or the author expects them to use background knowledge to figure things out on their own! These comprehension skills don’t come naturally - we need to teach them! The Parent Reading Guides will offer questions and prompts for you to use as you read to ensure that you are supporting your child’s comprehension development.

Literacy Knowledge

When our children know what to expect as they are reading, they are far more likely to enjoy and understand what they read. Our Parent Reading Guides give you ideas of prompts and questions you can use to support your child’s understanding of story structure as well as how information is organized.
